YouTube Red Launches Original Programming: What Does It Mean?
YouTube Red — the video site’s new subscription based, ad-free service that launched back in October — has officially debuted its first batch of original programming.
Some of YouTube’s most popular personalities teamed up with the service to create original content, which includes feature-length films from Rooster Teeth (titled Lazer Team) and AwesomenessTV (DanceCamp), as well as videos from PewDiePie and Lilly Singh, according to a report from Engadget.
In case you’re unfamiliar with YouTube Red and all its perks, we’ll break it down for you: For a monthly fee of $9.99, you not only get access to all of YouTube’s original content, but your video-viewing experience will be entirely ad-free.
It’s also a big draw for music fans, as YouTube Red includes a Google Music subscription. Further, those with an account can save YouTube videos offline and play them in the background, even without the website open — perhaps its biggest draw.
YouTube expects to launch an additional six shows throughout the remainder of the year, like Fight of the Living Dead which will see YouTubers battle it out after being thrown into “a frighteningly realistic zombie apocalypse.”
If you want access to YouTube’s free content but don’t want to pay for a subscription, worry not: CNET reports that the vast majority of YouTube’s original content will be available to those without subscriptions eventually — you’ll just have to sit through those annoying ads.
