Will Smith Spoke to Prince the Night Before He Died
Prince‘s death on Thursday, April 21, stunned fans and fellow celebrities across the world — Will Smith is one celebrity who was evidently a fan and a friend of the pop legend, and spoke to him the night before his death.
“I am stunned and heartbroken,” Smith wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday evening.
“I just spoke with him last night,” he continued. “Today, Jada & I mourn with all of you the loss of a beautiful poet, a true inspiration, and one of the most magnificent artists to ever grace this earth.
Smith’s expression of grief was one of many public memorials for the artist formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, who died at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota at the age of 57. The Eiffel Tower glowed purple on Thursday night in Paris, where Mariah Carey honored her late friend onstage at her AccorHotels Arena show. Also lit in memorial were the Minnesota Twins’ stadium, the Forum in L.A., City Halls in both L.A. and San Francisco and the New Orleans Superdome, People reports.
Charlie Wilson, who shared his now-mythic tale of getting trounced by the Purple One in a basketball pickup game — and enjoying his pancakes — in a Chappelle’s Show sketch called “True Hollywood Stories” in 2004, also reacted to Prince’s death in a statement.
“I’m blown away,” Wilson said. “May he rest in peace. Music has lost one of its greatest icons.”
