Three Grand Rapids Boys’ High School Basketball Teams Hope to Advance In State Tournament

Three Grand Rapids high schools remain alive in the Michigan High School Athletic Association boys’ basketball tournament, which hits the quarterfinal stage tonight.

Godwin Heights, Tri-Unity Christian and NorthPointe Christian hope to do what no area girls’ team could do — get to the state semifinals.

Godwin Heights will play Spring Lake in the Class B quarterfinal at Rockford tonight at 7 pm. The Wolverines are led by two outstanding seniors, Delaney Blaylock and Michael Williams, and they like to get out and run the ball up the floor, which is opposed to the Lakers more deliberate style. The Lakers, led by junior Keegan George, are looking to avenger last year’s elimination at the hands of the Wolverines in the regional finals. Godwin is 23-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of Class C quarterfinalist NorthPointe Christian.

In Class C, NorthPointe Christian will take on lakeshore power Shelby in Zeeland at Zeeland East at 7 p.m. The Mustangs have more size, with 6-6 senior Kual Nhial pacing a back court that has come on as of late. Preston Huckaby recently became the school’s all time leading scorer with 1300 points. Shelby has the better record at 23-1, but NorthPointe (19-5) plays in arguably a tougher conference, the OK Silver.

In Class D, Tri-Unity Christian will take on Morenci at Kalamazoo’ Loy Norrix High School at 7 p.m. Tri-Unity Christian coach Mark Keeler seems to be the high school version of Tom Izzo, getting his Defenders ready at the right time of the year. Tri-Unity stumbled out of the gate, but is 10-1 in its last 11 games, and is in the quarterfinals for the third time in five years. Much like the Class C tilt, this Class D quarterfinal will feature, a tall, methodical team, Tri-Unity, which is led by 6-7 senior Chris Osantowski, against a smaller, quicker Morenci squad, led by guard Austin Sandusky.
