T.I. Was Once Opposed to Joining the ‘Roots’ Remake Cast

T.I. continues to expand his acting resume with his newest role coming in the 2016 remake of the 1977 epic slave miniseries Roots. The role will show off Tip’s acting chops with the Atlanta rapper/actor having to play a much more serious role than any of his previous parts. Harris will be playing the role of Cyrus, but if Tip had went with his first feeling he wouldn’t be in the film whatsoever.

The Hustle Gang head honcho recently sat down with The Huffington Post where he talked about his role in the film and how he was reluctant to take a part in a film that involves dark emotions from so many people.

“This was an opportunity that [producer Will Packer] presented to me, and of course initially he got a little bit of push back from me,” said T.I. “I will admit that I was one of the ones to say, ‘Man, I don’t know if that needs to be remade.’ It was just a huge undertaking for him as a producer and for me as an actor to sign up to remake such a classic and to tell a story that has so much pain and just so much turmoil involved in it.”

Of course, he later conceded that starring in the remake would be the right thing to do. He drew upon his past incarcerations to put into his role as a slave. “I kind of amplified my thoughts and how I felt when my freedom was separate and apart from me,” he said. “So I kind of took that and pushed upon it, because Cyrus is actually the most rebellious and non-subservient character that there is. You never see Cyrus in Roots as a slave, he’s always a runaway slave – running, dodging bullets and doing whatever it takes to maintain his freedom. So it wasn’t as slave written as the rest of the characters, but I think all of the characters collectively to the story are important.”

Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne Malachi Kirby and Anika Noni Rose also star in the reboot. Roots, a four-part miniseries, premiers on The History Channel on Memorial Day (May 30).
