‘Star Wars’ Movies Coming to Digital HD For First Time April 10

While it may not be the original theatrical release DVD box set that everyone has been clamoring for, 20th Century Fox, Disney and Lucasfilm have teamed up for a brand new home video release. The Star Wars saga — Episodes I-VI — will be available on Digital HD for the first time on April 10.

All six films will be available as a complete digital movie collection and individually, so if you want to continue to ignore The Phantom Menace you can do so. The films will be available on iTunes, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Xbox Video, Vudu and Disney Movies Anywhere. No pricing was revealed with the announcement but iTunes is already offering preorders of the individual films for $19.99 (no word yet on what the complete collection will cost).

In addition to the films, each purchase will come with some new bonus material including “Star Wars: Discoveries from Inside” as well as “carefully curated” existing bonus features from the original DVD releases.

Said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy:

We’re thrilled that fans will be able to enjoy the Star Wars Saga on their digital devices wherever they go. These films broke new ground in technology, design, sound, and visual effects, and we’ve created some very special bonus material which delves into the Saga’s rich history, including new and never-before-released conversations between legendary Star Wars artists – the masters who helped George bring his iconic universe to life.

The release of the films on Digital HD is a nice bonus for Star Wars fans, but the really interesting part of this announcement is that Disney and Fox are playing nice on a big home video release. Because Fox retains home video distribution rights to Empire and Jedi through 2020 and A New Hope through forever, many thought that would be an impediment to Disney ever re-releasing the original theatrical cuts on DVD and Blu-ray. But, if they’re willing to work together on Digital HD, surely they’d be willing to work together on the original theatrical cuts, which would be the biggest Star Wars news since Star Wars: Episode 7 was announced.
