Self-Driving Pizza Delivery Vehicle Testing Continues

Domino’s Pizza and Ford have announced they are continuing their testing of self-driving pizza delivery vehicles. The testing first began in Ann Arbor.

The second round of testing will last two months and take place in Miami. It will focus on improving the customer service experience from what was learned in the Michigan testing. It will also add new, logistical challenges with delivery taking place in a larger, urban setting.

Domino’s says the new testing will focus on the last 50 feet of the customer experience, on what happens between the front door and the vehicle.

Here’s how it works:

  • Domino’s customers order online and choose to participate in the test.
  • A Ford Fusion Hybrid vehicle, manually driven but outfitted to look like a self-driving vehicle, will take the delivery from Domino’s to the customer’s address.
  • Customers can track the vehicle via GPS and will receive text messages as the vehicle approaches.
  • Text messages will instruct the customer how to unlock the “Domino’s Heatwave Compartment” inside the vehicle using a PIN code once their delivery arrives.

For now, the self-driving vehicles are being operated by a non-robot humans who live and breathe and sometimes eat pizza. Everything else is automated. There is no reason to believe things will turn out like they did in this episode of Black Mirror.
