Sam Smith and John Legend Join Forces for ‘Lay Me Down’ Visuals [Video]
Sam Smith proved he was a force to be reckoned with after winning four Grammy Awards for his debut album, In the Lonely Hour, last month. While his angelic voice stands alone, fans have grown to love when Sam teams up for duets with the likes of artists like Mary J. Blige. Now the British crooner is tapping another stellar singer to appear on a duet version of one of his chart-topping tunes.
Smith and John Legend, a 2015 Oscar and Golden Globe Award winner, join forces for charity, singing “Lay Me Down.” Smith and Legend even shot a video for the Jimmy Napes and Steve Fitzmaurice-produced ballad, which features behind-the-scenes moments from the recording session in addition to school children in a village in Africa. While Smith serenades on the mic, Legend tickles the piano keys. His vocals are full-blown by the second verse, which he sings solo before Smith joins him for the bridge and chorus.
The song is the official Red Nose Day single for Comic Relief. “‘Lay Me Down’ holds a very special place in my heart. Not only did I perform it at the Brits, I’m now going to perform it live on the Red Nose Day show with the extremely talented John Legend, which is so exciting,” said Smith.
Legend was just as excited to team up with the “Stay With Me” crooner. “Sam is such a talented artist. We’ve been looking forward to working together for a while now. I’m so glad we could collaborate on such a great song and for such a great cause.”
Legend and Sam will perform the song during BBC One’s Comic Relief – Face the Funny on March 13. Proceeds from “Lay Me Down” sales will go towards Comic Relief, a U.K. based charity, which works to change the lives of less fortunate and disadvantaged people across the U.K. and Africa.
