Racist Math Test Lands Retiring Teacher in Hot Water
A middle school teacher in Mobile, Ala. has made waves after handing out a a racially-charged math test to students with references to drugs, sex and guns.
The teacher at Burns Middle School gave the 10-question test to an eighth-grade class. Questions revolved around prostitution, stealing ammunition, the street value of cocaine, pimping, stolen cars and more. The word problems also feature names like Ramon, Leroy and LaShaunda. You can see the entire test here.
Another student in the class took a photo of the test and texted it to her mother, who immediately alerted the school.
One student said, “I was kind of laughing at it, because I thought it was kind of off.” A parent who heard what happened summed it up by saying, “I’m shocked. I don’t think it’s appropriate at all.”
The teacher who handed out the test — ironically, it was in a language arts class — has been identified by WPMI as JoAnne Bolser, who’s been placed on administrative leave. She’s reportedly going to retire after this school year.
The test has been making the rounds on the internet for years and has been used around the country by other teachers, many of whom wound up in trouble for it.
