Public Enemy’s ‘Fight the Power’ Opens and Closes 2016 Oscars [VIDEO]

Public Enemy’s 1989 political anthem “Fight the Power opened and closed out the 2016 Oscars on Sunday night (Feb. 28). The song was the perfect soundtrack to the awards ceremony, which had been under fire for its lack of diversity with its nominations this year.

The show’s host, Chris Rock, wasn’t shy about addressing it neither. During his political-charged monologue, the veteran comedian dubbed the 88th annual Academy Awards as the “White People’s Choice Awards.”

“Is Hollywood racist? You’re damn right Hollywood is racist,” he later commented.

We also wonder how much the show’s producer, veteran black filmmaker Reginald Hudlin (House PartyBoomerang), had to do with the song choice?

Playing PE’s “Fight the Power” was certainly a nod to Spike Lee who chose to skip the awards ceremony in protest over the nominations (#OscarsSoWhite). Ironically, his 1989 film Do the Right Thing, from which the PE song originally appeared, was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Danny Aiello’s performance in 1990. The veteran filmmaker also received a Lifetime Oscar from the film academy this year as well.

On Sunday, Public Enemy frontman and founder Chuck D went on his Twitter account to addressed his song being played at the 2016 Oscars. He tweeted:

Meanwhile, viewers at home praised Rock for opening and closing the Oscars with PE’s “Fight the Power.” Check out some of the reactions below:
