NAACP Image Awards 2016 Winners Include Jill Scott, Jussie Smollett & Queen Latifah
Scott nabbed three trophies: Outstanding Female Artist, Outstanding Album (for Woman) and Outstanding Song for “Back Together.” For Smollett, the Empire star won three awards including Outstanding New Artist.
Speaking of Empire, Fox’s juggernaut series won for Outstanding Drama Series, while Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson nabbed trophies for Outstanding Actor and Actress, respectively.
Elsewhere, Latifah won an award for Outstanding Actress In a Television Movie, Miniseries Or Dramatic Special for her portrayal of Bessie Smith in the HBO biopic, Bessie.
Other winners include Pharrell Williams who nabbed the Outstanding Male Artist trophy and Tyrese who won Outstanding Music Video for “Shame.” In addition, the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton picked up the Outstanding Motion Picture award.
Finally, John Legend received the NAACP President’s Award, for his active role in social change. During his speech, the piano man acknowledged activists who are fighting for social justice.
“Despite the daunting problems, I am hopeful that our generation will demand and achieve radical change in our lifetime,” he said.
Among the highlights at the show was the host, Anthony Anderson, kicking it off with a rap performance as N.W.A (Nominees With Attitudes) for the lack of racial diversity at the Academy Awards.
