Mary Mary’s Erica Campbell on ‘Inappropriate’ Dress: ‘I Felt Beautiful’ [Video]
Shortly after Mary Mary’s Erica Campbell posted a promotional photo of herself on her Instagram page to announce her Grammy nomination, the gospel singer was criticized by the Christian community for wearing a body-hugging white dress.
Campbell is responding to critics who suggest her outfit was “inappropriate.”
“I’m taking it in stride and I’m keeping it moving,” Campbell told Essence magazine. “When we took the picture, I felt beautiful, I felt confident, I felt sexy and I felt strong.”
“I thought I looked cute, but it obviously offended some people, which was never my intention.”
Campbell shared the picture with her husband, producer Warryn Campbell, and her family, who were all supportive of the glamour shot.
“Our whole family loved it,” said Erica’s sister, Tina Campbell. “You see grace, you see beauty, you see elegance and style. It’s wholesome.”
Campbell hopes the controversy over her picture will spark a larger conversation about Christianity and sexuality.
“This is about confidence and realizing that God made you and that you are beautiful just the way you are,” she said. “I think that young girls shouldn’t only get sexy images from people who are not proclaiming Jesus. But I am. And I’m cute, too.”
Campbell’s lead single, “A Little More Jesus,” is up for Best Gospel song at the 56th annual Grammy Awards. The Grammy Awards are being broadcast Jan. 26, 2014, from Los Angeles’ Staples Center on CBS.
Campbell expects to release her forthcoming solo debut album, “Help,” on March 25, 2014.
