Lalah Hathaway, Faith Evans, Fantasia Barrino Perform Soulful Medley at 2015 Black Girls Rock [Video]

Social injustice has been prevalent topic in America over the past two years, but in the black community, it is also the inspiration behind some of the most heartfelt music that exists. The folks behind Black Girls Rock event are very aware of this fact and dedicated a segment of the performance to pay homage to women of color.

The “Pillars of Justice” medley began with Lalah Hathaway gracing the stage to singer her father’s classic protest song, “Someday We’ll All Be Free,” and managed to more than live up to expectation and do her namesake justice.

Faith Evans followed and put a heck of a soulful spin on J. Cole’s Michael Brown tribute “Be Free.” The widow of the late great Notorious B.I.G. threw a nod to hip-hop and introduced it to an older demographic that may have not been aware of the song but could very much appreciate the topical message.

Finally, Fantasia took the audience to church with her stirring performance of the gospel classic “Mary Don’t You Weep.” The North Carolina native’s powerful vocals and southern brand of soul may have been the highlight of the night. While the Black Girls Rock event was a success as a whole, this riveting medley may have taken the cake with the sheer emotion of it all and certainly struck a chord with attendees and viewers alike.
