Grand Rapids School District Will Participate in National School Walkout

Staff and students in Grand Rapids schools will show their support on March 14 for the National School Walkout planned around the country.

The Superintendent made the announcement in a news release posted on Wednesday that she and the entire district stand behind the decision and will participate in the walkout.

The day of the event, March 14, will mark one month since the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. The walkout is to show support and call for stricter gun laws and more resources for those who struggle with mental health.

Students, teachers, administrators, parents and allies are encouraged to walk out for 17 minutes – one for every person killed at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Superintendent of GRPS says she feels its important that as a school district they show support and send a “clear message” to lawmakers that something needs to be done.

The National School Walk Out will be held at 10 a.m., in all time zones, around the U.S. Another one is planned for April 20th to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting.

Do you agree with the district’s decision? So far, people who have been commenting on the school district’s Facebook page seem to be in support.
