‘Get on Up’ Trailer: James Brown Wants You to Get Up Off of That Thing

In the second trailer for Tate Taylor’s James Brown biopic ‘Get on Up,’ we’re informed that James Brown (Chadwick Boseman) made it to soul superstardom without — and perhaps in spite of — his mother (Viola Davis), who only came into his life once he achieved success.

And as this is the second trailer, it must be noted how weird the music selections have been in advertising this movie. The film looks to focus a lot on his early career (though we see he goes to Vietnam), so choosing the song “Get Up Offa That Thing” is odd as it’s from 1976. Perhaps the film will conclude with James Brown performing “Living in America” for the ‘Rocky IV’ soundtrack. Still, Brown wrote great music, and it’s weird that they’re either modernizing or using other people’s music to sell the film.

Here’s the film’s synopsis:

In his follow-up to the four-time Academy Award®-nominated blockbuster The Help, Tate Taylor directs 42’s Chadwick Boseman as James Brown in Get on Up.  Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, the film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.  Boseman is joined in the drama by Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd.
‘Get On Up’ hits theaters August 1.
