Expect Mother Nature to Play Some Tricks with Halloween Weather on Friday

Mother Nature may have tricks of her own to play, with high winds, rain and snow being forecast by the National Weather Service’s Grand Rapids Office for Friday.

That’s going to make for some possibly challenging conditions for trick-or-treating on Halloween.

The National Weather Service today issued a wind advisory in effect from 10 a.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday with north wind of 15 to 25 miles per hour with wind gusts of up to 50 mph for West Michigan.

Rain showers are expected tonight through mid-day with a snow and rain shower mix in the afternoon and into the evening Friday. The burst of snow is expected to yield less than an inch.

The highs are expected to be around 40, but wind chills will make it feel like the 20s with wind-chilled temps dipping into the teens by Friday night. The evening is to be mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of snow showers before becoming partly cloudy.

With the winds possibly causing some power outages, the National Weather Service, Consumers Energy and authorities are urging parents and children out seeking those tasty treats to be careful in the conditions.

Among the Halloween safety tips shared today by Consumers Energy:

  • Children’s costumes should fit well and adults need to make sure children can see and be seen after dark.
  • Children and accompanying adults should carry flashlights.
  • Drivers should have their motor vehicles’ headlights on and use caution when driving through neighborhoods busy with trick-or-treaters.
  • Children, parents and guardians should avoid neighborhoods which appear to be without electricity because downed wires might also be in the vicinity.

With the gusting winds, the National Weather Service is forecasting 12 to 16 foot waves on Lake Michigan, “creating dangerous conditions on piers and break walls.”
