Erykah Badu Performs ‘Soldier’ & ‘Master Teacher’ at 2015 Black Girls Rock [Video]

Erykah Badu rocked the crowd with a stirring performance of “Soldier” and “Master Teacher” at the 2015 Black Girls Rock ceremony, which aired on BET on Sunday night (April 5).

Dressed in Afrocentric garb including dazzling jewelry and her long black hat, the veteran R&B singer was backed by a live band and background vocalist. Badu has the audience chanting the lyrics from “Master Teacher,” which goes, “What if there were no n—-s, only master teachers, I say woah.”

The “On and On” songbird even had the First Lady Michelle Obama nodding to her soulful performance.

Prior to her set, Badu was presented with the Rock Star award by fellow R&B singer Janelle Monae showered her with praise and crediting her with knowledge on music and life. Then a video montage played featuring Badu speaking on her non-profit foundation for the youth and explaining the motivation for creating her art.

During her acceptance speech, Badu goes on to thank Beverly Bond, the creator of Black Girls Rock and sent a greeting to home, stating “and I wanna say to my little rock star girls, Puma and Mars, at home, I love you. I miss you. I’ll see you soon.”

The 44-year-old singer also gave nods to the core female influences in her personals life, including her mother, Queenie, grandmothers Viola and Thelma, Godmother Gwen and Mother Nature.

Overall, Erykah Badu delivers a master class in performing, longevity and humility. She truly is a rock star.
