West Michigan Drive-In Theaters – Where are They Now?
Do know what these are?
If you grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, you remember the Drive-In movies. They were so much fun to go to. You’d pack the family, or pals, into the car and off you’d go for at least a double feature.
Back in those days, there were more than a hundred outdoor theaters operating within the state of Michigan. Since that time, 90% of them have gone dark or have been demolished, and presently, less than 10 Drive-ins remain today. What about West Michigan? Yep, we have one left.
It’s the Getty-4 in Muskegon, and you’ll still get that nostalgic thrill of the drive-in movie. At the Getty-4, part of the Celebration! theater group, you can tune in your movie on your car radio to enjoy your movie in stereo if you like, or, you can use those famous drive-in speakers. That’s what I remember.
You can bring your own food or head up to the concession stand for all your favorites. And, of course, there is still the playground.
Back in Indiana, where I grew up, I remember my brother and sister couldn’t wait to get to the Muncie Drive-In. Ahhh, there was a little bit of heaven. Our mother would pack food and drinks and we’d settle in for a good night in the car watching movies on that big screen.
Great memories. What about you?
The Getty Drive In officially opens for the season this Friday, April 15.
