Dr. Dre, Ice Cube Named in Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Suge Knight

Dr. Dre and Suge Knight aren’t exactly the best of friends, to put it kindly. Nearly two decades since the two cut ties and went their separate ways, they are now reunited in the form of a wrongful death lawsuit. Dr. Dre, along with former N.W.A. group mate Ice Cube, have been named in the suit filed by Lilian Carter, the widow of Terry Carter, who was killed after Knight struck him with his vehicle on the set of the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.

Knight may be the only person charged in the incident, but the wrongful death lawsuit brings Dr. Dre., Ice Cube and Universal Studios Inc. into the fray. Lilian Carter contends that Universal Studios were negligent and played a part in the death of her late husband. She claims that Dr. Dre warned production members to keep Knight away from the set, as well as the fact that Universal Studios hired Cle “Bone” Sloan as an “advisor” and a conduit between the production staff and local gangs so the film could be shot on-location. His altercation with Knight allegedly led to the hit-and-run death of Troy Carter.

“This lawsuit concerns the tragic tale of how reckless corporate greed, disguised as the quest for authenticity, [led] to a foreseeable altercation that resulted in the death of a successful businessman,” reads the complaint, which was filed Wednesday (June 3) in Los Angeles. Representatives for Ice Cube and Dr. Dre declined to comment, but Howard King, Dr. Dre’s lawyer, pegged the suit as “preposterous” in a statement made to the AP.

The former Death Row Records CEO is currently awaiting trial on murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run charges. His bail is set at $25 million and the odds seem to be stacked against Knight, whose days of narrowly escaping death and prison have been well-documented. Knight’s Attorney, Matt Fletcher, has filed a motion to dismiss the murder charges, pointing to a lack of evidence and the fact that Sloan never identified his client. If the dismissal isn’t granted, Suge Knight’s trial will being on July 7. He is currently pleading not guilty to all charges against him.
