Seventeen-year-old Zendaya Coleman has been selected to star in the title role of the Lifetime TV movie “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B.”

Aaliyah died Aug. 25, 2001, in a plane crash at the age of 22. She had just completed shooting her “Rock the Boat” music video in The Bahamas.

The film is based on the Christopher Farley’s book “Aaliyah: More than a Woman.”

Aaliyah was named Billboard’s 10th most famous R&B artist of the past 25 years. She released three solo albums: “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number” in 1994, “One in a Million” in 1996 and “Aaliyah” in 2001. She also starred in the movies “Romeo Must Die” and “Queen of the Damned.”

Coleman will record four Aaliyah songs for the biopic.

Her credits include The Disney Channel series “Shake It Up!” She is set to star in the new Disney series “K.C. Undercover,” and The Disney Channel original movie “Zapped,” which premieres this summer.

Coleman was a runner-up on season 16 of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” As for her singing, she released her self-titled debut album in 2013 and her first single, “Replay,” was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

“Aaliyah: Princess of R&B” will be filmed this summer and debut in fall on Lifetime.
