UPDATE: Shots Fired At Canadian Parliament; One Soldier Dead; One Gunman Dead

UPDATE 1 p.m. EST: The Canadian soldier who was shot outside the National War Memorial has died according to the Daily Globe and Mail. Ottawa police confirm that one of the gunmen was shot and killed, while another is still believed to be on the loose.

A gunman shot a soldier and then ran toward Canada’s Parliament building, Wednesday according to Ottawa police.

Police have confirmed that a man opened fire at the National War Memorial outside of the government complex shortly before 10 a.m. Shots hit a soldier who was standing guard. Witnesses say that they then heard shots when the man entered the Parliament building, where members were holding meetings.

Tony Clement, a member of parliament, sent out a tweet saying at least 30 shots were fired near a meeting in the Parliament building.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police tweeted a warning to those in and around downtown Ottawa to stay inside and away from windows and rooftops while they searched for the shooter or shooters.

There have been unconfirmed reports of there being multiple shooters some of who may have been shot themselves.

Details are still pouring in as the situation develops, but numerous witnesses have described a chaotic scene in the Canadian capital. The three locations where shootings occurred were the “National War Memorial, near the Rideau Centre and Parliament Hill.” One soldier guarding the War Memorial was killed.

At Parliament Hill, the seat of Canadian government, Prime Minister Stephen Harper was under protection and was not harmed. There were dozens of gunshots, though, “in the main Canadian Parliament building [starting] in the foyer, and a second round of shooting happened about a minute later in a hallway or near the entrance to the Parliament’s library,” according to Ottawa journalist Josh Wingrove.

Here’s a live report from Wingrove from inside Parliament Hill:
