Aretha Franklin Moves President Obama to Tears With ‘Natural Woman’

In case you thought Aretha Franklin‘s most rousing performances were behind her, the 73-year-old legend of soul music has officially reminded audiences that she’s very much in her prime.

At the 38th annual Kennedy Center Honors event, which filmed on December 6 and aired last night (December 29) on CBS, Franklin took the stage for a rendition of “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman” to honor Carole King, who wrote the song in 1967. And in the clip above, Franklin finds counts one very powerful man among her completely moved fan base: President Barack Obama, who’s reduced to tears.

Before Franklin — who begins the performance behind a piano — even hits the first chorus, POTUS can be seen wiping a tear out of his eye while King, who’s seated beside him and the First Lady, gestures wildly toward the stage. Then, as the song builds into its bridge’s crescendo, Franklin rises from the bench, tears off her coat and brings the audience to its feet.

Twitter followed suit after Franklin’s bow, and exploded with wild support of the set.

“I was IN THE WINGS for that insanely brilliant performance. Life changing. What a wonderful honors this year!” Kerry Washington posted after a well-deserved standing ovation.

Franklin previously performed “My Country ‘Tis Of Thee” for Obama as part of his 2009 inauguration.

Watch the performance above, and ready yourself for some pronounced goosebumps.
