Orange Is The New Black/Netflix

Essence magazine today announced it will honor the cast of the Netflix series “Orange Is The Black” at the eighth annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon next month.

The 2015 Black Women in Hollywood Awards’ Vanguard Award will go to Adrienne C. Moore, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox, Lorraine Toussaint, Samira Wiley, Uzo Aduba and Vicky Jeudy, all in the cast of the Emmy Award-winning series “Orange Is The New Black.”

“Orange Is the New Black” is a Netflix original series with a female-driven cast and crew. Conceived by “Weeds” creator Jenji Kohan, it stars Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, a woman who finds herself serving a 15-year sentence after being convicted of the decades-old crime of transporting money for her drug-dealing ex-girlfriend. It premiered July 11, 2013, and will enter its third season in 2015.

Other honors are going to actress-director Regina King (Fierce & Fearless Award); British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Lincoln Breakthrough of the Year Award) and Academy Award-nominated costume designer Ruth E. Carter (Visionary Award).

The Black Women in Hollywood luncheon is Feb. 19 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., and recognizes extraordinary achievements of trailblazing women in film and television.
